Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority honours HCT students for innovation in Solar Energy Harvesting

Ghanem along with the students alongside DSOA and HCT representatives.

Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA), the regulatory body for the integrated free zone technology park, today honoured two students from the Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai Men's Campus for installing a first-of-its-kind solar module for harvesting renewable energy, to power street lamps at the parking zone outside the Cedre Shopping Centre at Dubai Silicon Oasis.

Ahmad Yousuf Hussain Mohammed Jalal and Ammar Ibrahim Shambeh Mohamed Ghulam Al Mazam, final-year students from the Mechatronics Engineering Technology Bachelors at HCT Dubai Men's Campus developed the innovative system under the guidance of Dr Basim Al Lami.

The move towards the implementation of renewable energy sources articulates DSOA's three-pronged corporate social responsibility strategy - environment, human capital and community.

Ghanim Al Falasi, Senior Vice-President - Corporate Services at Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA), said, "Energy-conservation is a vital part of our strategy towards responsible corporate citizenship. In addition, our mission is to encourage local talent to invest their time and energies towards the development of eco-friendly solutions that reduce the dependence on non-renewable sources of energy. In doing so, we hope to accelerate the nation's goals to achieve all-round sustainable development."

Mark Hale, Associate Dean of Engineering - HCT Dubai Men's Campus, said, "The idea for the solar panel was wholly developed by our students. The design offers added efficiency owing to the in-built solar sensor device, which can track the sun's movement and harvest an optimum amount of energy through the day. The college is delighted to partner with DSOA to develop and implement such ground-breaking innovations for a greener tomorrow. These partnerships with Industry are extremely important for our students to conduct authentic 'Learning by Doing'."

Dubai Silicon Oasis is a wholly-owned entity of the Government of Dubai and operates as a free zone for semiconductor, microelectronic and other high technology-based companies looking to set up their regional headquarters and research and development (R&D) facilities in the Middle East and Africa region.
