Sheikh Mohammed establishes Dubai Taxi Corporation
In his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the
UAE His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has issued Law No.
(9) of 2016 replacing Dubai Transport Corporation with Dubai Taxi
Corporation.
Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council Sheikh Hamdan Bin
Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has also issued Executive Council Resolution
No.(48) of 2016, which stipulates that Dubai Taxi Corporation is a public
institution enjoying a legal status and capacity, as well as financial and
administrative autonomy.
The resolution also specifies the share capital of the corporation as being
set at Dhs100 million, which can be increased by a decision of Road and
Transport Authority’s Board of Directors.
The new resolution aims to enable the corporation to develop an integrated
transport system offering light vehicles (taxis) and specialised
transportation within and outside the country, as well as provide the
highest international standards in road transport for passengers and goods.
The resolution also aims to involve the private sector in providing
passenger transport services and encourage investment in this area.
The resolution also outlines the mandate of Dubai Taxi Corporation, which
includes developing the passenger transport sector, in line with the
strategies of the Emirate of Dubai, and conducting the necessary studies to
design, construct, operate and maintain its transport system.
The new resolution authorises the corporation to own, use and rent land,
properties and equipment to conduct its activities and reach its goals. It
also authorises it to own and rent maintenance workshops; establish its own
petrol stations to service its vehicles; access credit and loans required
for its operations; and provide all necessary guarantees, in line with
existing legislation.
Furthermore, the new resolution enables the corporation to sign franchising
agreements; transport management contracts; and operation and maintenance
contracts with specialised agencies, both within and outside the UAE; in
addition to providing consultancy and exchanging expertise with these
agencies.
Following the issuance of the new resolution, Executive Council Resolution
No. (20) of 2007 establishing Dubai Taxi Corporation, as well as any other
legislation that contradicts the provisions of the new resolution, are
considered null and void. Both the law and resolution are effective from the
date of issuance and will be published in the Official Gazette.
