Federal authority implements Dh10b water, power projects
Abu Dhabi is working to meet 95% of electricity demand in all emirates
The Federal Electricity & Water Authority of the UAE (Fewa) is currently
implementing electricity and water projects worth up to Dh10 billion
nationwide to meet increasing demand, director general of Fewa Mohammad
Mohammad Saleh said.
“Fewa was able to adapt its projects to meet the increasing demand for power
and water in the UAE,” Saleh said in statements to Al Ittihad newspaper, and
added that work is progressing, thanks to the directives and support from
President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President
and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Shaikh
Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Phase 1, which was carried out last year, included electricity projects
worth Dh5 billion to increase the transfer capacity of the grid to 7100 mega
volts and that of distribution grids from 4400 to 6600 mega volts. Phase 2,
with a total cost of Dh1.3 billion, covers Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al
Khaimah, Dhaid, Dibba and Fujairah.
The Abu Dhabi government is working to meet 95 per cent of the electricity
demand in all emirates by 2013. It is also increasing the desalination
capacity from 30 per cent to 41 per cent by 2012, Saleh added.
The efforts also seek to decrease the dependence on underground water from
24 per cent to 9 per cent by 2013 as well as to increase the share of
desalinated water in total consumption.
